Dollar General
Intrigued by the “Dollar Days” sales big department stores were advertising in newspapers, Cal Turner Sr. decided to open a store with only one price - one dollar. Turner’s Department store in Springfield, Kentucky, was converted into the first Dollar General Store in 1955. For over 80 years, Dollar General has kept its small-town approach to keeping things simple for hard-working customers by opening approximately 80% of Dollar General stores in communities of 20,000 or few people.
